Accents and Dialects
The terms accent and dialect are almost interchangeable, but a dialect tells us about the regional and class origins of a speaker while an accent is a feature or attribute referring to pronunciation by those for whom English is not their first language. In this class, students will utilize phonetics to learn accents and dialects. They will become aware of their own accents and learn how placement of the lips, teeth and tongue affect the way we speak. Some accents and dialects students will learn include Australian, Cockney, Deep South, French, New York, Northern Ireland, and Standard British English. Using Paul Meier's 7-step method, students will explore various accents and dialects to demonstrate in a performance at the end of the semester for family and friends.
